Random Comment

Now i KNOW these last couple of entries takes me away from my blog topic, but sometimes you just have to go on a tangent. Who knows who reads this stuff. But anyways getting to the point, I commented on a guys blog that was about how he fixes up Volkswagens and makes them really nice. The comment is here. But I think you should check out his site (click here) just for his pictures and what he does with these cars, it is really amazing. Well...See ya later.

Required Blog Post

I read on John Battelle's blog, that microsoft withdrew its offer of acquistion from Yahoo! I find this shocking because in order to compete with Google, Microsoft needs to step up in the fields of inerent search and other internet aspects. It will be interesting to see where this goes in the future, to see if Yahoo! was just interested in getting more money out of Microsoft, or will Microsoft be forced to look somewhere else to get a gateway to the internet.

Top Ten Sales Promotions used by MLB

I found a pretty cool article today waiting for my coach to email the team whether or not our game was canceled today due to the rain. Well anyways, I found an article about the Top 10 promotions used by teams in Major League Baseball to get their seats filled. It's a really cool article if you want to check it out just click here.

So other then the article, I forgot to post regarding the teams current status. Before this weekend the Pioneer's came into the series with an even conference record of 8-8. This weekend we face a tough opponent in CCSU and they have beaten us in the first three games up till now. The first game was lost by back to back homeruns in the top of the ninth to put CCSU up by one run. Although it was a heartbreaker we did come out the next day and compete very well against them, but couldn't hang on to the leads.

We play today Sunday, May 4 at 6:30 PM at The BallPark at Harbor Yard.

Pioneer's Split Series with the Mount

After losing the first of four games the Pioneer's split a double header with Mount St. Mary's on Saturday afternoon. Going into Sunday the Pioneer baseball team needed a win to stay in the hunt for the conference tournament.

Matt Fitton started the game for the Pioneers and came away with his first victory of the season moving his record to 1-5.

The Pioneers, 6-29 and (4-8), scored four times in the bottom of the third. Mike Drowne reached on an infield single with one out. Phil Tantillo followed with a single up the middle and Edwards plated Drowne with a single to left. Tyler Santos singled to right to load the bases, and Lynch hit a sacrifice fly to center to score the second run. On the relay home on the sac fly, Vittek threw the ball away to allow the runners to advance to second and third. DH Paul Schmidt made it hurt with a two-run single to center to make it 4-2.

The Pioneer's would not look back from there winning the game 11-8 with Mick Oswald getting his first save of the season.

The Pioneer's play there next home game Tuesday at 3:30 PM vs. the Rhode Island Rams.

Hope to see everyone there.

Jasper's take down the Pioneer's

Yesterday April 16, the Pioneer's took on the visiting Manhattan College Jaspers. The Jaspers came out on top pounding out 17 hits and taking advantage of seven walks and three errors to beat Sacred Heart 14-6 in a non-conference game.

Sophomore Mike Drowne started on the mound for the Pioneers and allowed six earned runs and six hits in 2 1/3 innings. He also walked five batters. Freshman Chris Whittemore had three of the 14 Pioneer hits, including an RBI double. Shortstop captain, Phil Tantillo had a pair of hits and an RBI.

SHU will be in action again this weekend when they play a four-game series against Mount St. Mary's at home starting Friday at 3 p.m.

Get out to Harbor Yard Ballpark and support the Pioneer's. I know with a 4-27 record we are not much to support but we can use the support more then ever right now and hopefully we will even our conference record to 6-6 this weekend with a four game sweep over Mount Saint Mary's. GO VQUZESHUF!!!!

Baseball Splits Series With LIU

After winning the first game and losing in both of a double header the fourth game of the series vs. LIU was a winning effort. The Sacred Heart baseball team opened up a 5-0 lead for starting pitcher Jack Wagoner and held off a furious Long Island University comeback to escape with a 10-9 Northeast Conference win Sunday afternoon.

Sacred Heart, 4-26 and 2-6 in the conference, got a run in the second on a bunt single by freshman MJ Schifano that scored Paul Schmidt who had led off the inning with a triple. The Pioneers made it 2-0 in the third when Tyler Santos tripled and scored later in the inning.

Phil Tantillo drove in the third Pioneer run with a single in the fourth inning, scoring Schmidt who had been hit by a pitch to start the frame. SHU opened a 5-0 lead in the top of the fifth on the first career home run by freshman left fielder Chris Whittemore.
LIU, 10-20 and 2-6, finally got to Wagoner for a run in the bottom of the inning on a solo homer by Dan Pirillo.

The Pioneers opened up what looked like a comfortable 8-1 margin in the sixth thanks to an RBI double by Santos, and a two-run two-bagger by Lynch.
After a long layoff as the Pioneers tacked on the three runs in the sixth, Mick Oswald relieved Wagoner in the bottom of the sixth and surrendered four runs to cut the SHU lead to 8-5. He gave up three hits and walked four in the inning.
A solo homer by Schmidt in the top of the eighth put the Pioneers back up 9-5 and a ground rule double by Whittemore in the ninth scored Tantillo to make it 10-5.

Corey Corcoran worked a scoreless seventh and eighth for the Pioneers but ran into trouble in the ninth. He allowed a leadoff double to Chris Kievit and then walked the next batter. He then yielded a double and a single to chase home two runs and cut the SHU lead to 10-7.
Chris Barthel came on in relief of Corcoran with one out in the inning. He struck out the first batter he faced for the second out, but then gave up a double to Frank DiMasi that made it 10-9. The junior then struck out Anthony Amatucci for the final out and earn his second save of the year.

Wagoner earned the victory with his five innings of work, allowing just one run on six hits. He struck out six and walked three to move to 1-5 on the season.
Tantillo led the 13-hit Pioneer offense with three hits. Lynch and Whittemore each finished with a pair of hits and three RBI.

The Pioneers will be in action again on Wednesday at home against Manhattan College. I will post the results of that game at the conclusion of it.

Poll Results

Well this will be very quick, but I just wanted to mention that six people voted, apparently I have very high traffic on this site. But I guess the results proved some school spirit, with all six votes going to us, Sacred Heart. Winning first place will take alot of work and motivation, that we have aspired to since the Baseball America (the magazine) came out with the preseason outlook. In the NEC Sacred Heart was slotted to come in 7th place out of 8 teams in the conference. We have a young team, but it is the hardest working team I have seen in all my years of playing baseball, so hopefully we can come through for all of you who voted and take the regular season crown. VQUZESHUF

For more information about the league outlook, and preseason poll for the NEC check out this article.

TEXAS!!!!!

So Thursday the team is heading down to Texas for our first games of the season. It is what the entire team has been anticipating since the start of practice. The only downfall is that we are leaving at 4 AM. But all things considered it should be a good trip.

With the amount of work the team has done, the pitching staff looks strong and should have a good southern trip. They have been working hard on every aspects of pitching and in my opinion are the best conditioned pitching staff in the Northeast. The pitchers have been running and lifting hard in preparation to the season opener at the University of Texas at San Antonio. This team is a very good hitting team and will give the pitching staff some problems here and there but I think we will come through big time. Along with the pitching staff the hitters have been anticipating seeing live pitching from another team. We play nine games in ten days and it should be an exciting time. Hopefully we can come out with a couple of wins against the three very very good teams we play down there. I just can't wait to start the season already and maybe get a new cowboy hat when we're down in Texas.

Keeping on with the Texas theme, I thought it would be interesting to look into how the Longhorns promote ticket sales for the sporting events they hold dear. Click Here for the link. It just basically explains how they promoted their basketball games to get sold out venues.

Alright well thats really all I have to talk about now, wish the team luck and hope for a couple of wins. I'll have my computer down in Texas, so if anyone reading wants to find out results of each game, I will be posting the game summaries and results after each game.

Throw back

Since nothing new is really going on with the team, other then practice every day. There is nothing really new to post on the 2008 Sacred Heart University Pioneers. But to mix it up a little bit I figured I might reminisce a little bit.

Yesterday at the men's basketball game I saw an old coach from my freshman year. He was the pitching coach for baseball team during the 2004-2005 season which was the first year our team had made the Northeast Conference Tournament. It was a very successful season for the Pioneers and allowed us to gain the confidence to enter the tournament the following year and win it. But now that pitching coach that got us to our first tournament headed down to Monmouth University the next year to fill the pitching coach job for their baseball team. He did more for the team then he would say he did. He gave a young pitching staff the confidence they needed to win the next year, and head down to Georgia for the NCAA Regional Tournament.

For times sake I'll stop there and talk about Georgia and the NCAA Tournament another time.

We're talking bout practice

So the first game is quickly approaching and we head to Texas for our first game on February 28th. With only a few weeks left till we step on the field, the team is practicing hard to get ready for on field action. Each day we practice as a team, the pitchers throw in anticipation for game days and the hitters are beginning to get back into the swing of things.

Each player is improving by the day, as the coaching staff can see the anticipation in their eyes for the first game. Being a northeast baseball program, we have one problem. The first time we step onto a baseball field is our first game. Since the weather up here is not ideal baseball weather, we are limited to indoors practice until the first day we get down to Texas.

Enough about that though, with the season only a few weeks away, we are looking for alot of fan support for our home games played at Harbor Yard. It is only five minutes down the road from campus and can use the support, escpecially in the colder weather when we first get back from Texas. Hope to see you at the stadium!!

Other teams promote their upcoming season, such as the Yankees. Sacred Heart and myself don't do as much to get people in the stadium for our games, but if you'd like to see what the Yankees do to sell tickets click here.

2008 Season Outlook

With the spring season fastly approaching the 2008 Sacred Heart Pioneer baseball program is practicing hard to get on the winning track again. After winning the 2006 NEC Championship game, the 2007 season was quite upsetting for the Pioneer's, where they finished fifth in the standings and failed to reach the conference tournament.

The Pioneer's graduated 11 senior players after the 2007 season and are returning few upper classman to the roster. With a plagued winter offseason and the loss of key players due to injury or non eligibility the roster is anchored by it's two seniors, captain Frank Bainer and first baseman Jeff Hanson. Both will be crucial in the success of this years season. The Pioneer's also have a talented middle infield fielded by junior captain Phil Tantillo and red shirt junior Ryan Nemcek. With the return of a talented group of sophmores and a large group of freshman players, the 2008 Pioneer's will be a very young program.

Practice has started and the countdown till the first game has started. The schedule includes games against: Houston, Tulane, UMass, Army, and many others. For a complete schedule go to the official Sacred Heart Baseball website.

With a handful of great coaches such as Nick Giaquinto, Wayne Mazzoni, Chris Aldrich, Earl Mathison and myself, the players have gotten back into the swing of things and have started to come together as a team. The few upper classmen will serve the young talent on this team to help them mature and grow into future stars for this program. Although young, the 2008 Sacred Heart Pioneer's should not be overlooked as we have the ability to win.
